It took 2.5 hours, but I got it. We had a senior go down in line with low blood sugar about midway in. The folks in the line helped him up and gave him some candy. He wouldn’t leave the line because he wanted to vote and the pole workers got him in a bit quicker.

Our voting system is ridiculous . The staffing and funding aren’t to par. The state of Georgia is making it tough intentionally. It should be every politicians duty to exercise ones voting franchise as simple as possible.

I didn’t know you were Georgia actually. I’m trying to think of who else lives in the state. Me, Under_ Score, Slant 6, and I think a few more.

I actually didn’t know early voting had started yet.

Is the “I Voted” in Spanish new? I don’t remember that.

That’s what’s maddening about the “both parties are the same” argument. One of them is doing its best to make it hard to vote, the other the opposite. Those seems like diametrically opposed positions, and I know which side I fall on.

I got my mail ballot today. Will probably fill it out tonight and drop it off at the secure box at city hall.

My ballot is on the dining room table. I really should get that done. It’s weird to hear so much kerfuffle (the technical term) about mail in voting when we’ve been doing it for years without issues.

Me too! I am going to try and vote Friday morning to get past this rush. Early voting is 3 weeks long!

Why everyone doesn’t vote by mail is weird to me. I haven’t stood in a line in years. Get your ballot, fill it out, and drop it off at the ballot box or in the mail.

Not being able to vote by mail just seems preposterous, I can’t imagine the ordeal of having to vote in person. Good on you!

I don’t get why it is so crowded when you have 3 weeks to vote and can choose to send the ballot by mail.

In here you only have one day to vote in person or have someone vote for you if you can’t (you must have declared that this person will be voting in your name).

While COVID would obviously make it trickier, we never have much wait time to vote, even in big cities.

And the voting staff are not paid, anybody can be part of it.

I voted last Friday. This was one reason for it. Back in 2018 MO voted for a separate committee to draw the districts. The present administration didn’t like that and is putting it back on the ballot to look good and get the governor in control of where the districts are drawn. Gerrymandering in a word.

The other two are bringing first point from$5 to 0$ and second one is reduce from $2500 to $2400. So no big loss there. A-Holes.

2.5 hours for early voting is absurd. Can’t wait to hear how things go across the nation on voting day.

My city is doing early voting at the BOE downtown, they made the municipal parking deck free, until early voting ends I think. One of my friends told me parking to leaving it took 15 minutes.

I’m in the lucky position that even though we are a deeply red state, the election system seems to be more or less status quo. No request needed mail in ballots for registered voters and a history of legal and functional mail in balloting. I don’t see the systemic v oter supression the rest of the country is seeing right now. I suspect its because we aren’t a battleground state. I have a feeling that its going to be a LOT closer race though.  There are a ton of coastal transplants that have moved in the last 4 years and I think the major population centers are far more blue than previous years.

It’s very simple. Here in America we have only 2 political parties and one of them is a bonkers far-right party. I think you’re in France, correct? The republicans are farther to the right than your Marine Le Pen and yet they’re one of our two supposedly “mainstream” parties. They have a long history of making it as hard as possible to vote because they want to make sure less people from the groups that don’t like them go out and vote.

While Marine Le Pen is on the right, she is also a communist in term of economy and would be on the left of Bernie :)

Our traditional right party... “Les Républicains” is somewhere in between Biden and Bernie while Macron (centrist) would be closer to Bernie .

In France, qualifying someone of liberal is akin to a socialist in the US but in reverse, the leftist using the term to qualify ultra- liberalism which is not a popular thing in here.

Fortunately we don’t have only two big parties so we don’t have most of your issues.

What’s the longest time you have ever waited in a queue before you could vote. I don’t think I’ve ever waited longer than 5 minutes. Maybe 10 minutes, years ago.

And this too on the 1 day of voting.

The Republicans are raising the false specter of election fraud, when in fact they are the ones who are rigging the election. Either with ID laws, or restricted drop off locations, or 50,000 “poll watchers,” it’s all bout disenfranchisement and intimidation.

There is no question in my mind that Election Day should either be moved to a Saturday or made into a national holiday. My preference is the latter. It’s not like we have to drive the buckboard into town after the harvest any more.

Well, I am cheating as i am still voting in the small village (population of ~700) i grew up in : I probably never waited more than 2 minutes.

There is also a poll center (sorry don’t know the right translation) in the school just under my windows (in a quite big city) and i never saw a long queue in front of it, probably less than 10 minutes in the worst case.

Here’s a helpful link with rough right/left classifications of political parties throughout the world:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/26/opinion/sunday/republican-platform-far-right.html

I highlighted your Socialists and Républicains to show where they fall relative to our Democrats and Republicans. As you can see our Republicans are much to the right of yours and yet they’re half of our political system.

My town office mailed me a ballot without me asking a couple weeks ago. Last Monday I filled it out, and dropped it in a drive through ballot box at the town hall . On Tuesday I confirmed with the Secretary of State online that it’s been received and accepted.

That sounds exactly like it is here, in every precinct I’ve voted in. I don’t think I’ve ever had to wait more than 2 or 3 people in line before me.  Every time on election day.

I don’t get why we can’t just fill out the ballot at home, and then hand it in at the polling station during the voting time. Avoid all the problems of mail in ballots and it’d be much faster to just drop off a ballot than fill it out.

Because the party that wants to make it easier to vote tries to do it in ways that make voting significantly less secure and think being required to show a photo ID is a problem when you’re required to present photo ID to buy a lcohol or tobacco.

If only it were possible to study the discriminatory impact of photo ID laws.

Which is of course what we’ve done and why the GOP is so hot on it.

Somehow we can issue everyone a social security card, but issuing everyone a photo id, like most countries in the world,  is just too tall of an order.

That’s a big part of the problem: southern conservative states make it hard to get photo ID.

I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.

How early did you get in line? We haven’t started early voting yet in Florida, but I’d like to be one of the first folks in line on October 19th because 1.) “ poll watchers” may show up and 2.) I’d like not to wait in line for the entire day, surrounded by boomers who don’t think Covid is real.
